Resources for Pakistan

Devastating rains and flooding have covered nearly one fifth of Pakistan. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, "I have visited many natural disasters, but I have never seen anything like this." With roughly 20 million people displaced and homeless, 1.7 million acres of cropland lost (with agricultural and livestock losses estimated at almost 3 billion dollars), the disaster is just starting to unfold. Nearly one million people have already been exposed to cholera and communicable water borne diseases.

Lifesaving Hesperian materials on cholera, nutrition, and basic primary care are available in Urdu, Sindhi, and English for free download. Here's how you can help:

  • Forward these materials to anyone who may be able to use or further distribute them;
  • Contact us to translate more materials into these languages;
  • Donate to Hesperian to support more translations of urgently needed health materials;
  • Donate to organizations working in Pakistan.
  • In order to prevent or minimize natural disasters like this one, we must look toward the future. We urge you to pressure your employer and government to take meaningful steps to reverse global warming, and adopt a more sustainable lifestyle yourself.

    In addition, we ask you to support the suspension of foreign debt repayment by Pakistan to international financial institutions. Currently Pakistan pays about US $3 billion on debt servicing every year on liabilities of $54 billion, and debt relief will help Pakistan recover more quickly from this disaster. As Pakistan faces "the worst natural disaster in Pakistan's history," we can all show our solidarity by contributing in some way.
