Women’s health is more than a medical issue. From sex-selection before birth through endless cooking, cleaning, and caregiving until their last breaths, the denial of human rights to women combines with persistent poverty and violence to ravage the health of women. This book exposes these conditions and tells stories of grassroots women’s actions worldwide that have struggled to change them. Inspiring, practical and visionary.
For the past twenty-five years, Anne Firth Murray has worked in the field of philanthropy, serving as a consultant to many foundations. She is the Founding President of The Global Fund for Women, which provides funds internationally to seed, strengthen, and link groups committed to women's well being. Currently, she is a scholar/activist at the Union Institute and a Consulting Professor in Human Biology at Stanford University.
What people have to say about From Outrage to Courage:
"From Outrage to Courage shows how the abrogation of women’s rights around the world persists as a central issue for everyone concerned with human rights. Panoramic in scope, this book illustrates the details of women’s lives – their struggles, their resilience, and the ability of so many to respond with practical and visionary solutions. A rare combination of clear analysis and inspiration."
- Mary Robinson
former President of Ireland, UN High Commissioner for Human Right, 1997-2002
"Anne Murray’s courageous and inspiration book should be serialized in every newspaper in the country. We cannot allow the depth and scope of the stigmatization and discrimination foisted on women all over this glove, and the resulting consequences on their health, to continue. By offering stellar examples of what good can be achieved when people care, Murray shows we can create change."
- Jill W. Sheffield
President, Family Care International
"This authoritative book is a must read for all women and men concerned about women’s health and rights. In a unique way, it combines evidence with passion, puts human faces behind the numbers, justifies the outrage and applauds the courage of women groups in diverse countries."
- Professor Mahmoud F. Fathalla
Former President, International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics
"Dealing with poverty, diminished status, violence, and patriarchal structures designed to deny women full participation in society has been a formidable challenge for women across the globe. Anne Firth Murray beautifully chronicles the efforts and accomplishments of grassroots women’s initiatives that have taken up this challenge. Murray’s stories and insights will inspire students, development workers, policy makers, and anyone interested in how change happens."
