New Where There Is No Doctor for The 21st Century

At the request of our partners worldwide, Hesperian is developing a new 21st century edition of our hallmark publication Where There Is No Doctor. Since its publication 30 years ago, and with editions in 80 languages, this book has become one of the most used and useful tools for health workers, clinicians, and others involved in primary health care and health promotion around the world.

Unfortunately, Where There Is No Doctor is needed even more today than when it was first developed. Despite dazzling advances in medical technology, nearly a billion people still have no access to modern medical services. Health inequities are increasing in many parts of the world, while preventable and treatable diseases still take an enormous toll on the world's poorest people. In addition to the traditional "diseases of poverty," the poor now face complex global health challenges that were not envisioned when Where There Is No Doctor was first developed. From the devastating spread of HIV/AIDS to the impact of environmental degradation, some of the most significant public health concerns have emerged and evolved over the last 20 years, the new Where There Is No Doctor will address these issues more comprehensively.

To develop the new Where There Is No Doctor, Hesperian will work with partners around the globe seeking input and review to incorporate updated information. This will ensure that this resource will support community based efforts on:

  • Women’s Health
  • Environmental Health and Illness
  • Tuberculosis, Malaria and other infectious diseases
  • Workers’ Health and Safety
  • Sustainable Development
  • Disability and Community Rehabilitation
  • Early Childhood Development
  • HIV/AIDS and Home Care

We will also be exploring how new digital technologies can assist both the collaborative development of the material, as well as create opportunities and platforms for information dissemination.
